ok, you can't really understand my excitement, but in the last few days I got a second strobe (a SB800) and yeasterday I got 2 lightstand and an umbrella.
I had to test it and I wanted to do something I knew it would be hard for me.
So I went with texture and white blown up background, something I usually have to fake in photoshop.

And this photo has no photoshop at all (except for cloning away an hairpin that was ugly: but usually they don't show, I didn't expect this amount of detail!!)
it's like a new world has been opened in front of me. Why the hell I didn't do this before?!

STROBIST INFO: you can see the set set . As you can see, it could not be more ghetto.
And YES, the umbrella is duct-taped to the stand (moishe, where is my umbrella swivel, pweeeeese?)
both the flash units are triggered by camera (yay for SBs :)

P.S. Painting your face black an hour before meeting a client is PLAIN DUMB. Kids, don't do this at home...

Reminder: The strobist group requires info on how off-camera flash units are being triggered.

So... your client wasn't a representative of the Al Jolson Society ? Because, this look might actually have been advantageous.

Really looking forward to seeing your already impressive work jump to the next level.

:)
Mammie .. how I luv ya, how I luv ya ... too much!!
Congrats -- I just got a similar setup last week, and oh man, I have so many experiments to do!

Good use of the reflector (so you're practically using a 3-light setup). I can see on the heel of your hand the direct light from camera right and the silver reflector from camera left.

Excellent photo - nice and sharp. Your subject is interesting.
ghetto photography rulez!!
What did the client say about the black face? ;)

Il set autocostruito è spettacolare. L'ombrello rende la luce molto morbida e complessivamente il risultato è molto gradevole.
Aggiungerò questo tutorial agli altri (ghettotutorials) che ho scaricato dal tuo sito.
Ciao
Antonio
so what camera do you have? I'm guessing the D200 or D80, because I was told that to use Commander mode on multiple SB, one flash had to be on-camera (for my D70s)

great work, by the way!
Amazing.
So this is a self potrait I guess. How the hell did you get such sharp a focus: I havent been able to achieve anywhere near that on a self potrait.
Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Concept Photos, and we'd love to have your photo added to the group.

mac-help.com: eheheheh Duct tape cures all evil. I wouldn't live without.

MarionQuaggatuggu: I fell in love with my umbrella. They really really work magic! It took a while to have my face clean again, but fortunately nothing beats a good scrubbing...

Beylisme: beh, in qualche modo le devo pur usare le tempere :(

*1102: thanks!

carlos.benjamin: woops. corrected!

Rainman662: ahahahha unfortunately not. I should choose my clients more wisely :D And I'm looking forward to that as well!

RobinBanks: Aw, Rossella *hugs*

emptysquare: reflectors are REALLy useful. I just discoverd them not too long ago and I feel dumb for not having used them earlier :)

3whiteroses: thankyou! My subject thanks you as well!

Rampant Gian: yay! Ghetto4evah!

Obsidienne: I managed to get it clean before meeting her, luckily :D

Antonio: felice di essere utile :D

j6photo: D200. I'm totally in love with that camera!

noahstone: thanks! :*

pmagrawal: I used a chair and a broom to focus where I would have been standing. Manual focus, not-to-shallow DOF and you're done.

Roberto: thanks!
cool one of my friends did similar auto portrait, and made it as fake united colors of Benetton advertising:)
anyway - cool
interesting photograph! :)
Thank you Moosey....

well, beautiful model
I hope you know that this picture is racist and innappropiate. If this is what you call art then you are not a very good artist are you? How about making a photo that's not offensive?
Oh lord. Rent-a-moose, please ignore the post above -- I think this is a neat photo with zero racial implications.
What's racist here?
What a ridiculous comment!
